Oversized Hoodies in Pakistan: What 300 GSM Actually Means
Share
Hoodie season in Pakistan is short, which is exactly why people get the purchase wrong. You buy in a rush in November when the first cold morning arrives, the hoodie turns out to be a thin fleece that goes shapeless by January, and you are back shopping the following year. The single number that separates a hoodie worth keeping from one that is not is GSM - and almost nobody selling hoodies online in Pakistan tells you what theirs is.
What GSM actually measures
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It is the weight of one square metre of the fabric, and it is the closest thing the clothing industry has to an honest spec sheet. A higher GSM means more yarn packed into the same area, which means more warmth, more structure and more resistance to stretching out at the cuffs and hem.
For hoodies, the useful range sits roughly between 240 and 400 GSM. Anything at or below about 240 GSM is a light hoodie - fine for a cool evening, not much use in an Islamabad January. Around 280 to 320 GSM is the sweet spot for Pakistan: warm enough for the coldest weeks in the north, not so heavy that it becomes unwearable in Karachi. Above 350 GSM you are into heavyweight territory that most of the country will only get a few weeks of use from.
Every hoodie and sweatshirt in the Dripzy hoodies collection is built on 300 GSM fleece, which is why they hold an oversized shape instead of hanging off the shoulders like a bedsheet. If a listing elsewhere does not state a GSM at all, that usually tells you something.
Why weight matters more in an oversized cut
This is the part people miss. A regular-fit hoodie can get away with lighter fabric because the cut does the work - it follows your body, so there is nothing to hold up. An oversized hoodie has extra fabric through the chest, body and sleeves, and that fabric has to have enough weight to fall properly. Put an oversized pattern on thin fleece and you do not get a streetwear silhouette, you get something that looks borrowed.
Weight is also what keeps the shape over time. Dropped shoulders and a boxy body only stay boxy if the fabric has the body to resist stretching. This is the same reason our heavier garment-dyed washed tees drape better than standard printed ones - it is the fabric doing it, not the pattern.
Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad: how much hoodie do you need?
Pakistan does not have one winter, it has three or four, and where you live should change what you buy.
Islamabad and the north get genuinely cold - December and January mornings regularly drop into low single digits. A 300 GSM hoodie over a tee is a real outer layer here for most of the day, and you will get four or five months out of it.
Lahore sits in the middle. Cold mornings and evenings from late November through February, mild afternoons in between. This is the climate a 300 GSM hoodie is best suited to, because you will actually take it on and off during the day rather than committing to a heavy coat.
Karachi barely gets a winter at all, but it gets cool evenings from December onward, and that is when a mid-weight hoodie earns its place. What Karachi does not need is a 400 GSM jacket-weight piece that spends eleven months in a cupboard.
Hoodie or sweatshirt?
Same fabric, different use. The hood adds warmth around the neck and head and gives the piece a heavier streetwear look; a crewneck sweatshirt is easier to wear indoors, under a jacket, or anywhere a hood would just bunch up behind your collar.
If you already own a couple of hoodies, a sweatshirt is usually the more useful next purchase. Our Dodge Challenger oversized sweatshirt in black is PKR 1,999 on the same 300 GSM fleece as the hooded version, so you are not trading down on fabric to lose the hood.
What an oversized hoodie should cost in Pakistan
Prices for oversized hoodies in Pakistan run from around PKR 1,500 at the bottom of the market to PKR 4,000 and up for imported or heavily branded pieces. The bottom end is almost always thin fleece with a print that will not survive the season.
For reference, here is where our winter line sits:
- Dodge Challenger oversized sweatshirt - Black - PKR 1,999
- Porsche oversized hoodie - Maroon - PKR 2,199
- Dodge Challenger oversized hoodie - White - PKR 2,399
All three are unisex and stocked in S, M, L and XL. The PKR 2,000 to 2,500 band is where you should expect proper mid-weight fleece and a print that lasts - below that, something has been cut, and it is usually the fabric.
Sizing an oversized hoodie
Oversized pieces are already cut wider and longer than a regular fit, so the common mistake is sizing up on top of that. If you normally wear a medium in a regular t-shirt, a medium in an oversized hoodie will already give you the dropped shoulder and the roomy body.
Size up only if you want the fit deliberately longer through the body, or if you plan to layer something bulky underneath. Going two sizes up does not make a hoodie more oversized - it just makes the shoulder seam sit halfway down your arm.
Getting more than one season out of it
Fleece flattens when you treat it like a t-shirt. Wash cold, inside out, and keep it out of a hot dryer - heat is what kills the loft on the inside of the fabric and turns a warm hoodie into a thin one. Hang it to dry in the shade rather than direct sun, especially on darker colours, and if it has a print, never iron over the graphic.
Hoodies also do not need washing as often as tees do. Most of the time an airing is enough, and fewer wash cycles is the simplest way to keep both the fleece and the print intact.
Building the rest of the outfit
A hoodie is a layer, which means what goes under it matters. Plain oversized tees in black, white or brown from PKR 1,200 in our essentials collection are the cleanest base - no print competing with the hoodie graphic, and long enough to show properly at the hem. If you want a print showing underneath, the full range sits in oversized t-shirts, and anything new lands in new arrivals first.
